Loose Associations – The Photographers’ Gallery

The Photographers' Gallery is the largest public gallery in London dedicated to photography.  From the latest emerging talent, to historical archives and established artists; the Gallery is universally recognised as one of the world’s leading centres for the presentation, learning, debate, new practice and thinking in and around photography.

The challenge

Loose Associations is a quarterly publication in novella format from The Photographers’ Gallery.  Loosely inspired by the gallery’s programme of exhibitions, this collection of writings, images and observations considers current ideas of representation and image-making across a variety of photographic forms.

Supported using public funding by Arts Council England, The Photographers’ Gallery had a limited budget, but required high quality production values to help justify the £5 price tag.

Our solution

Park proposed a cover and text stock to The Photographers’ Gallery.  We recommended using a coarse uncoated stock to add weight to the ‘novella’ format.  We then produced a white paper dummy to make sure the customer was happy with our recommendations.

We used our dedicated plate profile and hard drying inks adapted for uncoated materials in order to achieve the very best reproduction and detail on the uncoated stocks.

On sight of the artwork, which included a heavy ink coverage on the cover, we suggested using an anti-scuff matt lamination to prevent marking.

Proofs were supplied as hi-resolution Epson proofs on coated paper.

Adhering to ISO12647 colour management targets, Park accurately matched the signed-off proofs while Sarah Boris passed on press on behalf of The Photographers’ Gallery.

Print production, lamination, folding and binding were all completed in-house.

The results

*A functional, and aesthetically pleasing novella, brought in on tight budget restrictions

*Sharp images, with good contrast and lift throughout

*Consistent and dense blacks

*Accurate folding, stitching and trimming

Tribes – Michel Haddi

One of the world’s leading fashion photographers for over 20 years, Michel Haddi's work has graced the most prestigious magazines in the fashion industry.  He is a member of a photographing aristocracy that transforms simple fashion shots into true artistic creations.

The challenge

Haddi collaborated with casting director Camilla Arthur to produce a rich and diverse folio of portrait imagery capturing the culture and fashion of what it was like in the 80’s.  He wanted to publish ‘Tribes’, a bookazine filled with solo portraits and group shots – a portrayal of London style.

Michel wanted the bookazine to look “dark and intense”, with imagery that jumped from the page.

We were tasked to come up with a specification which stayed within the customer’s budget and which made his photographs look amazing.

Our solution

We produced several white paper dummies on different materials to ascertain the best stock.

We recommended that using a gloss stock would enhance his photos and give a ‘zine’ type look to his high fashion photography. Using a gloss lamination on the outer cover prevented the black cover from marking.

To ensure we acheived the very best colour reproduction and detail, we used our dedicated plate profile and hard drying inks adapted for coated materials.

Proofs were supplied as hi-resolution Epson proofs on coated paper.

Adhering to ISO12647 colour management targets, Park accurately matched the signed-off proofs.

Print production, folding and binding were all completed in-house.

The results

*A visually stunning fashion photography collector’s book

*Very sharp images, with good contrast and lift throughout

*Consistent and dense blacks

*Accurate folding, stitching and trimming

*Tribes has now sold out and Michel is now looking at producing a 90’s style version.

Haute Couture – Bruno Bisang

Fashion photographer Bruno Bisang and illustrator Martine Brand collaborated with Michel Haddi to publish HAUTE COUTURE.  This exclusive collectors bookzine takes you backstage at the fashion shows of the greatest Haute Couture designers and includes photos/illustrations of well known supermodels.

Bruno Bisang works between Milan, New York, Paris, and Zurich for a stable of high-octane clients.  Martine Brand’s illustration artwork is published worldwide in prestigious magazines and commended by major brands and designers.  Michel Haddi is a member of a photographing aristocracy that transforms simple fashion shots into true artistic creations, and is also editor and publisher at Michel Haddi Studios.

The challenge

Our customer, Michel Haddi, wanted the extremely high-end bookazine to look “have real zest”, with imagery that jumped from the page.  We were tasked to come up with a specification which stayed within the customer’s budget and which made his photographs look amazing.

The bookazine was to be launched at an exhibition in Cologne Germany, where both artists were present, so the production had to be flawless.

Our solution

We produced several white paper dummies on different materials to ascertain the best stock.

There were two covers with a common text to enhance the collectability.

We recommended that using a gloss stock would enhance the photography and illustrations, and give a ‘zine’ type look to the high fashion collaboration.  Using a gloss lamination on the outer cover stopped the black cover from marking.

To achieve the best colour reproduction and detail we used our dedicated plate profile and hard drying inks adapted for coated materials.

Proofs were supplied as hi-resolution Epson proofs on coated paper.

Adhering to ISO12647 colour management targets, Park accurately matched the signed-off proofs.

The job was press passed by Bruno (who flew in from Brussels) and Martine (who flew in from Amsterdam) using our overnight bedroom facilities.

Print production, folding and binding were all completed in-house.

The results

*A visually stunning fashion photography/illustration collector’s book

*Very sharp images, with good contrast and lift throughout

*Consistent and dense blacks

*Accurate folding, stitching and trimming

*HAUTE COUTURE has now sold out
