WRAP Magazine Issue#11 S/S’15

WRAP Magazine is a celebration of creative illustration, design and culture, putting the spotlight on some of the best artists from around the world.

Founded by designers Chris Harrison and Polly Glass in September 2010 with the aim of showcasing the work of up-and-coming illustrators, Wrap is published three times a year and stocked in more than 150 shops around the world.

The challenge

Each issue includes five, double-sided sheets of wrapping paper with exclusive prints by the featured artists.  WRAP Magazine sought a printer to deliver accurate, vibrant, rich and detailed image reproduction on uncoated paper, and execute the technically challenging finishing to a high standard.

Our solution

Our retouching team worked with WRAP to retouch any images where photography had not captured the artwork accurately.

Image profiles and a 200# plate profile and hard drying inks, specially developed for uncoated material, were used, and printing was in accordance with ISO 12647-2 (2013) colour standard.

The technically challenging finishing was completed to a very high standard - the wrapping paper was perforated, folded and bound into the magazine, in a manner allowing easy removal by the reader.

All proofing, corrections, print production and finishing were carried out in-house, ensuring greater control and conformity to high environmental credentials, matching WRAP Magazine’s ethical values.

PUSS PUSS Magazine Issue#2

Work of art

PUSS PUSS is content driven independent magazine for culture, fashion, music and catlovers. There are no naff cat outfits or cat food advice, instead, beautiful photography, illustration, intelligent writing, and interviews by established and up-and-coming creatives from around the globe.

Riposte Magazine recommended Park to Maria Joudina, Editor in Chief and Creative Director of PUSS PUSS. After careful consideration we were chosen because of our expertise to add value and creativity, improve the quality of the magazine and reduce costs.

The challenge

The second issue of PUSS PUSS included more content and more cats, which resulted in more pages. Unfortunately, this meant that the increase in weight took the magazine into the next mailing price bracket. With an inflexible budget we had two options, to tell PUSS PUSS they had to compromise on content, or to come up with a solution to reduce the final weight of the magazine.

Our solution

A mixture of coated and uncoated materials were used to increase the visual impact and tactile feel of the magazine. In order to address the weight issue, Park sourced a bulkier uncoated paper with the same opacity as the previous issue, but with less weight. We would not compromise on the coated paper as we foresaw issues with show-through. After extensive research on a previous project, we were able to source an uncoated material bringing the magazine in under the 500g weight limit.

A 200# screen specially developed for uncoated materials together with hard drying inks also adapted for uncoated materials were used for the production of the uncoated text sections.

Proofs were supplied as hi-res Epson proofs on uncoated paper for the uncoated material sections and coated paper for the coated material sections and for the cover.

Adhering to ISO12647 colour management targets, Park accurately matched the signed-off proofs while the customer passed on press.

Print production, folding and binding were completed in-house, while a member of the Park production team supervised the foiling of the cover to ensure the exceptional quality required by our customer.
