Ted Baker London SS15


Ted Baker’s approach to marketing is through out-of-the-ordinary, ‘stand-out’ marketing pieces. 


The challenge

Ted Baker wanted the SS15 brochure to reflect this approach and burst into life with flashes of bold print, strong textured fabrics and vivid colours. We had to make sure each of these elements was reflected in the production, manufactured within a ‘no-fail’ strict time schedule for a press launch and worldwide distribution to key buyers.


Our solution

The images were retouched to reflect the punchy palette of the clothing ranges. We suggested a soft matt coated text stock, echoing the feel of the photography.

Image and plate profiles with a 200# screen refined to achieve the best results on coated stock, and high pigmentation inks were used. Printing was to ISO 12647-2 (2013) colour standard.

Extensive production testing highlighted three issues:

1. The sensors on the saddle-stitching line did not recognise the clear acetate. Our solution was to screen-print a white border outside of the trim area (when the white text of the acetate was printed) so the sensors could pick it up.

2. Scratching of the silk screen on the acetate when stitching. Our solution was to silk screen on the inner of the acetate.

3. Scratching on the acetate. Our first proposed solution was that a dust jacket was used to minimise the scratching.  However, trials showed that it caused more scratching than it saved, and Ted Baker sacrificed the small amount of scratching to keep the acetate cover.


The results

* A visually stunning, innovative result produced within a tight deadline, following proactive advice from our team

* Excellent detail, vibrancy and colour consistency matching the full production machine book proof

* Good cross spine match-ups, colour and positioning

* A tactile outer envelope printed with an image of sunshine reflecting on water, which leads the reader into the beach/ holiday theme of the brochure

Mulberry Cara Delevingne Collection


Mulberry is known for its luxury leather craft heritage, creating accessories, shoes and womenswear that fuse traditional craftsmanship with common sense practicality and creative flair.


The challenge

The brochure introduced a new collection of bags designed in collaboration with super model, Cara Delevingne. It had to reflect Mulberry’s home and inspiration - the British Isles.

In keeping with the ‘countryside’ feel of the campaign, we had to ensure the earthy tones were vibrant, and the blacks were rich and dense.


Our solution

We suggested using an off-white uncoated material, to preserve the Mulberry ‘earthy tones’, and as a result all images required manipulation to create the maximum lift, contrast and vibrancy on the uncoated stock. The 4 colour monochrome images were balanced, retouched and neutralised.

To obtain the very best result, a 200# screen with image and plate profiles specially developed for uncoated materials were used, together with hard drying inks adapted for uncoated materials. The sheets were printed to ISO 12647-2 (2013) colour standard.

Scatter machine proofs produced on press were supplied to check the colour accuracy to the handbags featured, following which the images were retouched by pre-press team to obtain a near-perfect match.


The results

* Excellent colour match to the handbags

* Vibrant colour and detail on the off-white uncoated material which delivers arresting images

* Excellent cross-spine match-ups (colour and positioning)

* Rich, dense blacks

* Accurate folding and trimming

* Exact positioning of brass wire stitches along the spine at 25% and 75% of spine height

Heesen Yachts: Galactica Star book

Smooth sailing
Founded in 1978, Heesen Yachts has become one of the world's leading yacht builders.  Custom built to the highest standards, all their yachts have one thing in common: the performance of luxury.


The challenge
In the summer of 2013, Heesen Yachts commissioned a case-bound book to celebrate the building of their 65 metre flagship superyacht, Galactica Star.  The book was to capture the attention of an international audience and to convey the superb quality and luxury of this exceptional yacht.

Heesen required an eye catching cover and case binding, 140 pages of stunning imagery, 1,000 copies in total over two languages, and delivery in a short timeframe.


Our solution
The cover and endpapers were printed on Splendorgel Extra White, a very white stock.  An arresting impression of a ship’s bow splashing through the sea was created using a perfectly registered multi-level debossing of the printed cover sheet.  The luxurious nature of the yacht was emphasised using a blue metallic foil for the ship’s name on the front cover and spine.

The images were retouched and machine proofed on press.  A 240 line screen was used to retain detail.
Park’s ISO 12647 colour management system allowed us to achieve a very close match to the scatter proofs and excellent colour consistency.  Gloss and matt varnishes were applied to make the images stand out and to achieve a near photographic quality.

All proofing, corrections and print production took place in-house, while a member of the Park production team personally supervised the debossing and case binding at specialist partners.

Advance copies were delivered by the Park team to Italy and later the finished product to the Monaco Boat Show for the launch event.
