ABF 2016

Associated British Foods plc is a diversified international food, ingredients and retail group with sales of £13.4bn, 124,000 employees and operations in 48 counties across Europe, southern Africa, the Americas, Asia and Australia.

Associated British Foods plc aims to consistently deliver value, the Annual Report is used by ABF plc as a prime marketing tool in conveying their strategy to stakeholders.

The Challenge

ABF plc delivered a strong operational performance in 2016 and the Annual Report was to convey the progress in each of the five strategic business segments: Grocery, Sugar, Agriculture, Ingredients and Retail.  As each business segment was clearly identified with short pages each in a specific colour, colour consistency and accurate binding within the report was imperative.

Our Solution

A key requirement of the project was to complete production within an exceptionally fast 3 working days, in order to meet the ‘no-fail’ despatch date to the client’s overseas offices.  The job was passed for press on 4/11/16, advance deliveries were required on the 9/11/16 and mailing completed on the 10/11/16.

To ensure that the key messages and images were vibrant and captivating, Park applied a high gloss male and neutral female varnish with excellent fit.  A neutral sealer was used for the background and a gloss varnish was used on the areas to be highlighted.

A 200# screen and profiles specially developed for the coated materials, were used to achieve the very best production.

Extensive proofing included on-press machine scatter-proofs, high resolution Epson’s run to FOGRA standards and an Indigo book proof.  5 stages of extensive author’s corrections and reproofing (from 13:00 to 20:00hrs) were completed on the day of sign off.  Once passed at 20:00hrs, we started to print within the hour.

To maximise colour consistency, Park adhered to ISO 12647-2 (2013) colour standard, we accurately matched the signed-off proofs while the customer passed the cover and first few sections on press.

Print production, folding and binding were completed in-house, while a member of the production team supervised the silk lamination at the outworkers.

The Results

CAPCO 2016

CAPCO PLC is one of the largest property companies in central London.  It seeks to create value in  prime city locations through distinctive place‐making, innovation and enterprise, and the  attraction of world class luxury brands.

The annual report with its high production values and luxurious look‐and‐feel is used by CAPCO  as a prime marketing tool in conveying this strategy to stakeholders.

The Challenge

This technically challenging design was required to be produced within a very demanding five day  schedule.

Our Solution

A fine 240# conventional screen was applied to the images to ensure a high level of detail and vibrancy, and a 21 Micron stochastic screen to the artworks and tints.  A 200# conventional  screen was used for the Accounts section.  The stochastic screen produces the flattest and smoothest tints.  However, most pictures are not of sufficient quality to be reproduced well using a Stochastic screen.  In most cases, images are better reproduced using a conventional screen.  This is why our XD Screening, a technology that is unique to us, allowing us to choose the type of screening to be used on different parts of the  page, is such a significant customer benefit.

Extensive proofing included on‐press machine scatter‐proofs, and high resolution Epson’s run to FOGRA standards.  Adhering to ISO12647 colour management targets, our Colour Manager matched the scatterproof for colour reproduction, and the Epson for content.

Using our new KBA 6 colour + coat  press for the CAPCO production enabled super‐fast make‐readies, while applying a neutral coat enabled us to back up the Review sections immediately.  Together, the fast make‐readies and coating reduced the time the designer was required to press pass to a single half day ‐ very  efficient considering the busy time of year for both ourselves and Black Sun.  Print production, folding and lamination were completed in‐house, while a member of the  production team supervised the thread‐sewing and binding.   A key requirement of the project was to complete production within five days in order to meet  the ‘no‐fail’ despatch date to the client’s overseas offices.

Bunzl 2016

Bunzl is a successful international distribution and outsourcing group operating in 29 countries across the Americas, Europe and Australasia with global headquarters in London, UK.

The Annual Report, is used by Bunzl as a prime marketing tool to convey their strategy to  stakeholders.   Bunzl chose Conran for the design.

The Challenge

Bunzl are continually looking to refine and develop their processes and procedures to make their  operations more effective and efficient.  By doing so, they are able to gain a competitive advantage, by offering their customers more cost‐effective solutions, while at the same time improving their profitability.  Their approach to print was no different; Conran required a top quality annual report produced in a fast timescale.  We were required to produce the report within a very demanding 5 day schedule.

Our Solution

To ensure the images were vibrant and captivating, we created male/female artwork for the varnishes, so that a well registered high gloss varnish could be applied to the images, and a neutral sealer to the rest of the text.  This accentuated the varnish, with the effect of making the images jump from the pages.

Extensive proofing included on‐press machine scatter‐proofs, high resolution Epsons run to FOGRA standards and an Indigo book proof.  Conran’s print consultant passed on press the cover and first sections of the text.  To achieve high colour consistency, we then adhered to ISO12647 colour management targets and colour matched the rest of the sections to the sections passed by the consultant.

Print production and folding were completed in‐house while a member of our production team supervised the thread‐sewing and binding to ensure the accurate cross‐spine matchups.  A key requirement of the project was to complete production within 5 days in order to meet the ‘no‐fail’ despatch date to the client’s overseas offices.  This was an extremely fast schedule given the requirement for such a high gloss varnish.

The Results

*High impact annual report which effectively conveys Bunzl’s key messages

*Vibrant captivating image reproduction retaining lots of detail

*Effective use of high gloss male and neutral female varnishes to highlight images

*Beautifully smooth tints throughout

*High colour consistency across the four colour process and two special inks

*Accurate cross‐spine matchups: colour and position

*Accurate and well executed folding, thread sewing and binding

*Produced within 5 days from the pass for press
