Morgan Sindall Annual Report 2017

Morgan Sindall Group is a leading UK construction and regeneration group.

The challenge

The Morgan Sindall Annual Report is used as a key marketing tool to communicate their strategy to stakeholders.  The report had to be printed to a very high standard in order to communicate their strong platform created for future growth.  Our strategy was to support MerchantCantos and Morgan Sindall with high production values and enable them to take benefit from a design feature not initially within budget.

Our solution

The initial estimate enquiry requested the extra cost for a 6 page cover.  The cost of moving from a 4 page to a 6 page cover broke the budget.  We therefore suggested changing the stock to our house stock, which we could offer at a more competitive rate.  The saving was sufficient to cover the extra cost.

We worked collaboratively with MerchantCantos to ensure that the artwork for the 6 page cover and text gatefold throw-out were prepared correctly.  We provided the sizes for the flaps, to ensure they would work throughout the production process.

A 200# screen, and plate profiles specially developed for coated materials, were used for the production.

Proofing included machine scatterproofs, high resolution Epson’s run to FOGRA standards, and Indigo book proofs x 6.

To maximise colour consistency, we adhered to ISO12647 colour management targets.  We accurately matched the signed off proofs while our Colour Manager and the customer passed on press.

Print production and binding for the Morgan Sindall Annual Report were completed in-house, while a member of the production team supervised the matt lamination, cover creasing and glue dot application at the outworkers.

The results

* Stunning annual report conveying a strong operational performance

* A report taking benefit from a 6 page cover enabled by us through proactive cost savings

CAPCO Annual Report 2017

Capital & Counties Properties PLC is one of the largest property companies in central London.

The challenge

The CAPCO Annual Report is used as a key marketing tool to communicate their strategy to stakeholders.   The Report had to have high production values and a luxurious look-and-feel.

The technically challenging design incorporated lots of flat tints which had to be produced within a very demanding five day schedule.

Our solution

The stochastic screen produces the flattest and smoothest tints.  However, most pictures are not of sufficient quality to be reproduced well using a Stochastic screen.  In most cases, images are better reproduced using a conventional screen.  In this instance we used our own XD Screening, a technology that is unique to us, allowing us to choose the type of screening to be used on different parts of the page.

For the CAPCO Annual Report a fine 240# conventional screen was applied to the images to ensure a high level of detail and vibrancy, and a 21 Micron Stochastic screen to the artworks and tints.  The Stochastic screen ensures the fines lines are held and the tints are kept smooth and flat, while the mix of screens provides an ultimately luxurious look-and-feel.

Extensive proofing included on-press machine scatter-proofs, and high resolution Epson’s run to FOGRA standards.

Adhering to ISO12647 colour management targets, our Colour Manager matched the scatter-proof for colour reproduction, and the Epson for content.  Using our KBA 6 colour + coat press for the CAPCO production enabled super-fast make-readies, while applying a coat enabled us to back up the Review sections immediately.  Together, the fast make-readies and coating reduced the designer’s press passing time to a single half day - very important, considering the busy time of year for both ourselves and Black Sun.

In order to maintain the look-and-feel of the matt Heaven 42, we applied neutral matt coat.

Print production, folding and lamination for the CAPCO Annual Report were completed in-house, while a member of our production team supervised the thread-sewing and binding.

A key requirement of the project was to complete production within five days in order to meet the ‘no-fail’ despatch date to the client’s overseas offices.

The results

* Stunning annual report conveying the quality of the developments and strength of CAPCO

* Vibrant captivating image reproduction retaining lots of detail

* Beautifully smooth tints throughout the critically important maps, floor plans and charts

* High colour consistency

* Clear white-out type within a solid metallic background

* Accurate cross-spine matchups

* Accurate folding and binding

* Produced within 5 days from the pass for press

* Quick press pass, all colour work passed in 4hrs

ABF Annual Report 2017

Associated British Foods (ABF) plc is a diversified international food, ingredients and retail group.

The challenge

The ABF Annual Report, is used as a prime marketing tool in conveying their strategy to stakeholders, and needed to be produced to a very high quality.

The uncoated stock presented a particular challenge as the production schedule was a very tight 4 working days and ink coverage was heavy.

Our solution

A standard uncoated paper printed with such heavy coverage would not dry in the available time.  The incorporation of short pages, which create uneven pressure during the final trim, further increased the chance of marking if the ink was not 100% dry.

We carried out press tests of different materials and inks, applying coating as a part of the tests in order to identify a combination that would work best.

Inspira proved to be the fastest drying uncoated text material, albeit with a surface with an element of loose paper debris, as is common with many uncoated materials.  Conran, the designer, was happy as this would add to the natural feel that they were looking to achieve.

The text pages proved too light to coat as the coating introduced a curl which prevented folding.  Specially formulated anti-rub hard drying inks were used to speed up drying.

After testing on press we established that a coat could however be applied to the solid colours on the front of the short pages, as these divider pages only required trimming (and not folding).  This coat sealed in the ink and prevented marking during the final trim.

Extensive colour proofing included on-press machine scatter-proofs, high resolution Epson’s run to FOGRA standards, and an Indigo book proof.

The ABF Annual Report had each business segment clearly identified with a specific colour, so colour consistency within the report was imperative.  Excellent colour reproduction and colour consistency was achieved through our ISO 12647 colour management programme.

All print production was completed in-house.

The results

* Stunning annual report conveying a strong performance and key messages

* A tactile friendly report which encourages the reader to open the pages and read it

* Vibrant captivating image reproduction retaining lots of detail

* Dense blacks

* Beautifully smooth tints throughout

* Excellent colour consistency

* Accurate cross-spine matchups: colour and positioning

* Accurate and well executed folding and PUR binding

* Passed for press on Friday evening and delivered on Thursday morning, despite the use of heavy coverage on an uncoated paper
