Spitfire Audio is a British music technology company with the aim of inspiring a generation of orchestral music makers.
They specialise in sounds: sample libraries, virtual instruments and other useful software devices. They collaborate with the best composers, artists and engineers in the world to build musical tools that sound great and are exciting to use.
Exclusive content; stories, photos, conversations and interviews with a whole host of musicians and friends of the company were collated for a very special print publication called ‘The Spitfire Audio Annual’.
The Annual was to be printed on recycled materials, but with a print quality and attention to detail, that paid homage to the exclusive content, spectacular images and bespoke-designed typeface.
Park Communications were involved in the early stages of the design and added differentiation to the finished result. We helped with refining specifications, paper choices, sourcing materials and offered specialist advice on producing the slipcase.
They wanted a strong recycled feel so we specified three rarely used recycled paper stocks with a unique feel and texture in order to add a distinctive, recycled, tactile look and feel.
For a distinctive front cover, we suggested a hard hit of the gloss black foil to increase the definition and create a debossed effect, the hard-hit deboss also protects the foil when removing the Annual from the slipcase.
Park’s creative input was required when it came to the slipcases, which were white foiled on a flat sheet then made up by hand. We worked closely with the binders to come up with a process to achieve an even finish. To ensure we had the right amount of dwell, pressure and heat needed to gain the optimum visual effect for the debossed typeface, we suggested using a wooden block, inserted into the slipcase. This aspect of the project was especially important, as the debossing highlighted the newly-designed typeface.
Park Communications created a bespoke screen and plate profile for the uncoated material chosen for the litho production. Adhering to ISO12647 colour management targets, we accurately matched the signed-off proofs while the customer passed on press.
