Propercorn makes popcorn and use the hashtag #DoneProperly.  They launched the business in 2011 and their story is one of success and great achievement.  Their ethos is rooted in design and creativity, a step away from more traditional snack brands.  

They wanted to produce a magazine which was a collection of all the projects they had been working on in the previous 6 months, offering an insight into what's next.

 

The challenge

We needed to provide advice on the use of lots of bright vibrant colours.  They needed to create a cover that stood out, adding to the creativity, while keeping the costs down.

 

Our solution

The design required lots of bright colours which were set up as specials.  Unfortunately it would have been very expensive to print each as a special.  We worked with them and advised on the CMYK breakdowns that would give the results that they sought; this way they got a good range of colours all within budget.

We recommended using a combination of coated and uncoated stocks to add interest for the reader.  White paper dummies were produced to demonstrate different paper stocks/weight combinations, enabling the customer to choose the combination that best met their requirements.

To add an extra dimension, we recommended using a spot gloss UV varnish on top of a matt lamination to make the cover really ‘jump out’.

A 200# screen, and image and plate profiles specially developed to achieve the best results for each of the materials, were applied.  Hard drying inks, adapted for uncoated materials, were used for the production of the uncoated text sections.

Proofs were supplied as hi-resolution Epson proofs on uncoated paper for the uncoated sections and coated paper for the coated sections.

Adhering to ISO12647 colour management targets, we accurately matched the signed-off proofs while the customer passed on press.

Print production and folding and binding were completed in-house, while a member of the production team supervised the UV spot gloss varnish at the outworker.
