The Painting Show – British Council

  • The Painting Show British Council

The Painting Show is an exhibition by the British Council which presents a selection of recent works by fifteen British artists who demonstrate the richness and vigour of contemporary painting in the UK.  Featuring new acquisitions to the British Council Collection, alongside generous loan works.

The exhibition is accompanied by a full colour catalogue, designed by The Bleach Room, and featuring commissioned texts by art historian John-Paul Stonard, and exhibition curator Linsey Young.

The challenge

The Painting Show focuses on the primacy of painting in Britain today through the work of artists of different generations.

An illustrated full colour exhibition catalogue was to be produced and made available for purchase.  The publication includes newly commissioned essays by critic and art historian John Paul Stonnard and exhibition curator Linsey Young.

The Bleach Room needed our quality and consistency to produce the high profile book, which was to accompany the tour and reach international audiences.

Our solution

We recommended using a combination of coated and uncoated stocks to add a little interest for the reader, to distinguish between the copy and to highlight the paintings.  White paper dummies were produced to demonstrate different paper stocks/weight combinations, so the customer could choose the combination that best met their requirements.

A 200# screen, and image and plate profiles specially developed to achieve the best results were applied for each of the materials.  Hard drying inks, adapted for uncoated materials, were used for the production of the uncoated sections.

Indigo book proofs were supplied to enable the customer to check the positioning of text and images relative to the spine.

Proofs were also supplied as hi-resolution Epson proofs on coated and uncoated paper accordingly.

Adhering to ISO12647 colour management targets, we accurately matched the signed-off proofs while the customer passed on press.

Print production, folding, binding and shrink wrapping were all completed in-house.

The result

*A high quality production for the exhibition catalogue to accompany the tour and reach international audiences

*Excellent lift and detail achieved

*Colour images very sharp with good contrast

*Colour images colour accurate to the original paintings

*Accurate folding and PUR binding

Further information

We also produced a digitally printed, single colour 170mm x 130mm 16pp booklet on Coloraction Jungle 100gsm, which was inserted inside the catalogue prior to shrink wrapping.  We recommended a number of colour stocks, but Linsey wanted a specific green.  After searching, we found Coloraction Jungle, which she was extremely happy with.
