Perk was approached by photographer Alan McFetridge and designer Duncan Whyte to print On the Line, a documentation of a vast wildfire which ravaged northern Canada in 2016.
Funded by the Royal Photographic Society’s Environmental Bursary, the project was intended to highlight the impact of climate change on forests, and their shrinking ability to clean and regulate the earth’s atmosphere.
The pièce de résistance of this production was the cover, designed to resemble burnt bark. After extensive experimentation, the desired effect was achieved by printing on G.F. Smith’s 100% recycled ‘Extract Flint Grey’ in a double-hit duotone using two-colour black ink. Pebble-embossing lent an uncannily realistic look and feel.
Other sustainable features in this production included cover foiling in a sustainable aluminium, and a choice of FSC-certified Munken Lynx for the text stock.
Singer-sewn bound in cotton thread for a natural, understated finish.
