Christie’s Mumbai – The India Sale

  • Christie's India Sale
  • Christie's India Sale

Recognized as the international auction leader for Indian art, Christie's has a longstanding commitment to this important and ever-growing market.  In 1994, Christie's opened their office in Mumbai and just one year later, held their first sale of Modern and Contemporary Indian Art.

The challenge

We deliver complicated projects with colour consistency, all within schedule, and as a result we are regarded as Christie’s ‘Gold’ supplier – first choice for their most complex projects.

This time, we were required to produce the catalogue for the India sale, which was to be held at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai in December last year.

Our solution

Christie’s fine art catalogues present a unique set of challenges requiring complex, high quality print, in an exceptionally fast turnaround.

The India Sale catalogue was produced from receipt of artwork to delivery within 7 working days, despite the printing of solid metallic gold (slow to dry) and 2 working days being required to accurately hand position 6,000 labels onto the front and back covers.

Everything in the proofing and printing process was calibrated to ISO 12647-2 (2013).  The 200# plate and press profiles were built to achieve the best results on coated paper.  Accurate colour matching to the original images was achieved despite it not being possible to refer to proofs, as Christie’s do not produce proofs on their productions.  Ink weights, dot gain and LAB values were constantly monitored and kept within agreed targets.  The targets being stipulated by Christie’s being tighter than those under ISO 12647-2 (2013).  Images of the same piece of art were colour matched with images elsewhere in the catalogue, including images printed on the reverse of the perfected sheet.

To speed up the production process, we used a fast- and hard-drying metallic gold ink, sourced following extensive research and testing.

Print production, folding, PUR binding and labelling were all completed in-house.

The result

*Stunning fine art catalogue produced to a high standard and within strict time constraints

*Excellent lift and detail achieved with good contrast and colour accuracy

*3,000 copies produced within 7 working days from the pass for press

*Consistent, smooth, hickey and marking free, solid gold pages

*Clean and crisp foil consistent throughout the print run

*Beautifully debossed front and back covers with accurately hand positioned labels printed in four colour process

*Accurate folding and PUR binding

“Park are one of only a small number of printers entrusted to print the catalogues for our highest value sales. Despite last minute schedule and pagination changes, and in conjunction with complex impositions and bindery requirements, Park consistently deliver the catalogues to a high standard.”
