Christie’s Einstein and Venice sale

Christie’s is a name and place that speaks of extraordinary art, unparalleled service and expertise, as well as international glamour. Christie’s offers around 350 auctions annually in over 80 categories, including all areas of fine and decorative arts, jewellery, photographs, collectables, wine, and more. They have a global presence in 46 countries, with 10 salerooms around the world.

 

The challenge

Park Communications is regarded as Christie’s ‘Gold’ supplier – chosen for the most complex projects. We deliver complicated litho projects with colour consistency, all within schedule.

The Head of Production and Head of Creative came to visit the Park facility and were very impressed with our colour management and ability to match imagery across all litho, digital and large format print.

This time, we were asked to produce a fast turnaround requirement for three 3m x 2m boards displaying images, and three wall vinyl’s for a forthcoming books auction.

Two of the images were challenging duotones, where colour management would be critical.

 

Our solution

Christie’s requested 3mm foamex boards, but we proposed 5mm given the size of the boards.
The four colour image was run to Epson and a sample square run on Foamex. A very close match was achieved.

The duotone images were a bit trickier. The images, one of Einstein and one of Venice, were monochrome and rather dark, Christie’s wanted to add a brightness and richness by incorporating PMS Silver 877. As large format printing equipment works only in 4 colour process, we recommended printing the images in 4 colour black onto a silver vinyl, the silver exactly matching PMS 877.

Sample proofs were run from representative areas of each image. These proofs showed that due to the density of black within the images, the black masked most of the silver.

Our retouching team reviewed the proofs and retouched the image in a manner sympathetic to each piece. The brightness and richness of the silver was allowed to come through, whilst the essence of the image was retained. Each image was retouched using four different treatments to provide Christie’s with a choice.

Proofs were run of each version and Christie’s were delighted. After a face-to-face review with the Park Account Director, they chose a preferred option for each image.

The prints were run the next day and installed in Kings Street the following day.

The whole process took only four days, with files received Tuesday morning, site surveys taking place on Tuesday afternoon, proofs supplied, reviewed and approved on Wednesday, prints run on Thursday and installation taking place on Friday.

 

The results

* Impressive colour consistent boards and wall vinyls.

* A very close match to the 4 colour image.

* Rich and bright duotone images achieved through four different treatments.

* Proofs produced within a tight schedule, enabled by our London location.

* All retouching, proofing, printing and installation achieved within a tight four day deadline.

Christie’s were delighted with the finished result and, on the day of installation, appointed Park to produce the window displays advertising the high profile Audrey Hepburn sale in their King Street and South Kensington premises.
