Beauty Papers Issue #5 is a photography focussed, London-based, independent magazine dedicated to exploring the culture of beauty and make up. 

The challenge

The objective for the production was to produce very high quality images throughout.  Beauty Papers Issue #5 comprises 8 different front covers with a common text (seven different covers and a limited edition run of 150 copies with another different cover).

Our solution

We suggested using a mixture of gloss, uncoated and a hybrid sheet to add interest and tactility to the reading experience.  White paper dummies were prepared, so that the customer could see how each would work within the magazine.  Machine scatterproofs were produced so the customer could ensure the imagery reproduced exactly as they wished on the chosen stocks.

Trials were carried out on press using different screens and inks to ensure we achieved the very best reproduction of the imagery, including on the hybrid sheet.

200# screens, each specially developed for each of the coated, uncoated and hybrid materials, together with specially developed plate profiles were applied to gain the best reproduction.

The limited edition cover was to be printed with neon pink.  In order to help Beauty Papers understand how this would look, the pink was integrated into the image so that our Epson proofs simulated the neon pink.

Final artwork was proofed using hi-res Epson proofs on coated and uncoated proofing paper.

Adhering to ISO 12647-2 (2013) colour standard, we accurately matched the signed-off proofs while the customer passed on press.

Print production, folding and binding for Beauty Papers Issue #5 were completed in-house.

The results

* We proposed material, finishes, and by providing high quality production, enabled Beauty Papers to achieve a creative, captivating, tactile product within a modest budget and speedy timetable

*The power and essence of the photography was conveyed and the detail and colour of the imagery accurately reproduced

*Exceptional lift and detail was achieved on the uncoated stock

*Areas of solid colour were smooth and consistent

*Blacks were dense and good contrast maintained throughout

*Folding and PUR binding were to a high standard
