Map printing: sustainable maps & posters for Urban Good
Urban Good CIC, a social enterprise interested in making cities better, has a sideline in map-making.
Their green city maps resemble the OS maps you might take on a countryside walk – the difference being, the maps are of bustling metropolises.
Footways: Central London, a special collaboration with London Living Streets and Transport for London, was created as a new walking network to connect important landmarks with many of the lesser-known, more interesting streets through the city.
The client originally requested a 100% recycled stock, but map printing is tricky with long-grain recycled materials, as they often will not fold to the desired pattern. Instead, Park recommended ‘Figaro’, a short-grain, offset stock, suitably sourced from FSC-certified forests.
The maps were printed in four Pantone colours, and produced as both double-sided, folded maps and posters.
For the maps, Park produced a belly band to hold the maps neatly flat and add an extra pop of visual appeal in Pantone fluorescent pink.
Client testimonial
“It was great to go down and see our first Footways map run off the press at Park, just down the road from our east London studio. We loved seeing their lithographic press which could perfect (print both sides at the same time) our A1 sheet that is densely packed with useful information. Getting the ink density right on such a complex and fiddly map was critical, and the team on the print floor have done a great job.”
