Superstore Wilderness: tabloid-sized photography magazine
Created by the team behind The Ride Journal, Superstore Wilderness is a photography-based cycling magazine dedicated to exploring and searching out new cycling routes on the outskirts of London.
The tabloid-style publication brings together the worlds of art and adventure sport. Through writing, photography and graphic design, it records how cyclists and walkers interact with these unplanned, liminal spaces.
With the support of cycling brand Rapha, the publication has been brought to life by Andrew and Philip Diprose.
Being a photography magazine, the quality of printing was paramount. The team chose Park for our excellent colour reproduction, and the quality of past works we’ve produced for Andrew.
The chosen size was 380 x 285mm – almost tabloid sized, and perfect for double-page spreads which showcase the imagery with maximal impact.
Our challenge was to achieve a production in keeping with this tabloid style, but with the quality of a sheetfed litho production. Some images required extra attention, particularly the greyscale images which lacked some depth. Working with both the customer and the prepress team, we were able to underpin those images to improve their contrast and vibrancy.
The magazine was printed on Edixion 70gsm Offset, a lightweight uncoated material which emulates the feeling of tabloid newspapers.
Park’s uncoated colour profiles also helped to ensure that we achieved the best result for the images on the uncoated paper. With lightweight paper there will always be an element of show-through. To minimise this, we gave careful consideration to our ink levels, reducing these without compromising image quality.
