Sphere magazine printing: versioned for consumer brands

PUR-boundin-house at Park

Illustrated London News (ILN) publishes Sphere, a quarterly magazine with a niche as a partner to luxury brands.

With Sphere, brands can have a version produced with a branded front cover and custom editorial sections. The result is a high-quality read which customers will consider the brand’s own, but at lower effort and cost.

Versions of the Fall 2021 issue included Aston Martin, Smallbone, Hamptons and Air Partner, as well as the ILN version. Park matched the customer’s supplied Epson proofs for colour and was entrusted by ILN to press pass on their behalf.

With many different covers to produce, extra-special care was taken to reduce complexity. This meant segregating the bespoke covers throughout production and packing, to avoid any chance of mixing. The copies were distributed from Park’s headquarters to a number of regional addresses, despatched within seven days of receiving sign-off on the production.

Each copy was printed on a mixture of luxuriant, bulky stocks: tactile Essential Velvet 115gsm for the text, and 350gsm for the cover, which had a gloss laminate applied for a higher-quality feel. This production was PUR-bound in-house at Park.

Many brands today are re-evaluating their relationship with digital marketing, as the costs of advertising increase and consumers’ attention becomes harder to capture. Print x digital: the role of print in the marketing mix

The debate around ‘print vs. digital’ is misguided. Pioneering luxury, fashion and direct-to-consumer brands are treating them as complementary channels, to maximise customer engagement and lifetime value. “…the brand was concerned it wasn’t connecting deeply to its evolving target audiences — a mix of up-and-coming Millennials, high-earning Gen X’ers, and downsizing Boomers.” In order to …
