Associated British Foods (ABF) plc is a diversified international food, ingredients and retail group. 

The challenge

The ABF Annual Report, is used as a prime marketing tool in conveying their strategy to stakeholders, and needed to be produced to a very high quality.

The uncoated stock presented a particular challenge as the production schedule was a very tight 4 working days and ink coverage was heavy.

Our solution

A standard uncoated paper printed with such heavy coverage would not dry in the available time.  The incorporation of short pages, which create uneven pressure during the final trim, further increased the chance of marking if the ink was not 100% dry.

We carried out press tests of different materials and inks, applying coating as a part of the tests in order to identify a combination that would work best.

Inspira proved to be the fastest drying uncoated text material, albeit with a surface with an element of loose paper debris, as is common with many uncoated materials.  Conran, the designer, was happy as this would add to the natural feel that they were looking to achieve.

The text pages proved too light to coat as the coating introduced a curl which prevented folding.  Specially formulated anti-rub hard drying inks were used to speed up drying.

After testing on press we established that a coat could however be applied to the solid colours on the front of the short pages, as these divider pages only required trimming (and not folding).  This coat sealed in the ink and prevented marking during the final trim.

Extensive colour proofing included on-press machine scatter-proofs, high resolution Epson’s run to FOGRA standards, and an Indigo book proof.

The ABF Annual Report had each business segment clearly identified with a specific colour, so colour consistency within the report was imperative.  Excellent colour reproduction and colour consistency was achieved through our ISO 12647 colour management programme.

All print production was completed in-house.

* A tactile friendly report which encourages the reader to open the pages and read it

* Vibrant captivating image reproduction retaining lots of detail

* Dense blacks

* Beautifully smooth tints throughout

* Excellent colour consistency

* Accurate cross-spine matchups: colour and positioning

* Accurate and well executed folding and PUR binding

* Passed for press on Friday evening and delivered on Thursday morning, despite the use of heavy coverage on an uncoated paper
